Every Child Matters – Orange Shirt Day 2018

In 5S we have been reading articles and picture books and discussing First Nations traditions, along with the impact of residential schools. Today was Orange Shirt Day. I asked students to wear orange in honor of residential school victims and survivors, and in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for the future. Every Child Matters!

We made orange Attachment hearts to help commemorate the victims and survivors. These fabric hearts were made to give to someone the student feels attached to and cares for. Attachment hearts have been used to support kinship, connections and relationships among Aboriginal children, youth, families and communities. The heart 🧡 represents relationships and connections children and youth have to their parents/guardians, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, extended family and peers. The use of the hearts 🧡🧡, shares the importance of Traditional First Nations médecines as a form of comfort and other uses.

Global Cardboard Challenge 2018

Dear Grade 5 Families,

We are going to take part in the Global Cardboard Challenge (http://www.cardboardchallenge.com)

The Global Cardboard Challenge is a fun, playful and inspiring way to foster creativity in children through a simple process called Creative Play. Through creative play, kids engage their imaginations and open up their minds to what’s possible – and then they turn their ideas into something real.

In this process, children learn to develop and test their own ideas, take chances, solve problems, get input from others and become better creative thinkers. Students also have the opportunity to develop our Essential Graduated Competencies (Citizenship, Communication, Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking, Personal Career Development, Technological Fluency), as well as Language Arts and Math skills.

The Global Cardboard Challenge:

  • engages children in creative play
  • fosters creativity, ingenuity, resourcefulness, perseverance and teamwork
  • gives children an opportunity to explore their interests and passions, and make things that have an impact on others
  • provides a platform for communities to actively foster and celebrate child creativity
  • increases global happiness and makes for a happier, more playful world.
  • is FUN

From October 1st-5th students will:

IMAGINE: Think of new possibilities and explore wild ideas – the sky’s the limit.

  • Example: Individually or in groups, brainstorm ideas for games or other cardboard creations. Discuss what’s possible. Sketch out designs and mix-and-match ideas. Freely play with materials to fuel new ideas and thinking.

BUILD: Take one great idea and make a project out of it. Work and play with physical materials; build what you imagine.

  • Example: Make cardboard arcade games, toys, robots, rocket ships, a city, a map, a maze, whatever you can dream up. Create, construct, measure, cut using the provided materials.

PLAY: Interact with your own and others’ creations to see what works and what needs to be modified. Iterate. This is the time to tinker and test within an environment of playful experimentation.

  • Example: If children built games, this is the time to play them! Children might go around playing each other’s games and creations, giving suggestions for modification and improvement as they tinker and play.

Students are asked to bring in any of the following:

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Cereal boxes
  • Shoe boxes
  • Empty containers of strawberries
  • Empty cupcake containers (if available)
  • Empty bottles and bottle caps
  • Egg cartons
  • Milk cartons
  • Paper towel and toilet paper tubes
  • Old fabric, pillowcases or clothes cut into scraps
  • Bouncy balls (small and medium)
  • Mini basketballs (if available)
  • Mini soccer balls (if available)
  • Any sort of small hoop or o-ring that would function to create a basketball hoop (coffee cups? to cut apart?)

Weather Folklore

Students were investigating different weather folklore the last couple of weeks. Here are some presentations of some work. Students chose to make posters, GreenScreen videos or CoSpaces 3D reality spaces to demonstrate some of their knowledge.
